From the UK, it is more accessible than most people assume, and far more rewarding than almost anywhere else on earth.

Flight Dreamers specialises in connecting UK travellers with their African adventures. Why South Africa Belongs on Every UK Traveller’s List: A Country of Extraordinary Contrasts

Cape Town: Table Mountain, Camps Bay, and One of the World’s Greatest Cities Waiting for You

Cape Town is regularly voted among the world’s most beautiful cities and for good reason. Table Mountain rises 1,085 metres above the Atlantic, its flat summit almost always draped in cloud called the ‘tablecloth’. The cable car to the top takes seven minutes and delivers one of Africa’s great views. Below, the V&A Waterfront is a thriving harbour district of restaurants, shops, and the Nobel Square.

Camps Bay sits just around the coast from central Cape Town: a crescent of white sand backed by the Twelve Apostles mountain range, with the cold Atlantic glittering in front. The beach bars along Victoria Road at sunset are among the most spectacular drinking spots in the world. Nearby Bantry Bay and Sea Point offer more intimate alternatives with equally dramatic scenery.

Beyond the beaches, Cape Town rewards exploration. The Bo-Kaap neighbourhood is a living history of the Cape Malay community, its cobblestoned streets lined with pastel-coloured houses. Kalk Bay on the False Bay coastline is a fishing village turned creative quarter. Constantia, in the southern suburbs, is home to some of South Africa’s oldest wine estates.

Johannesburg: The City of Gold, Apartheid History, and the Gateway to Every Safari in South Africa

Johannesburg: Jo’burg, or Joeys to those who know it: is not always the first city UK travellers think of visiting, but it rewards those who engage with it seriously. The Apartheid Museum is one of the most important and moving museums in the world a comprehensive, honest, and deeply human account of South Africa’s recent history. It is not an easy visit, but it is an essential one.

The Sandton district is Johannesburg’s most polished neighbourhood: upscale hotels, the Mall of Africa, and the Gautrain connection to OR Tambo International Airport. Rosebank offers a more relaxed atmosphere with the Rosebank Sunday Market and accessible restaurants. Maboneng, in the city’s east, is Jo’burg’s creative regeneration story, galleries, independent coffee shops, and weekend markets in repurposed industrial buildings.

Johannesburg is also the most practical gateway to South Africa’s safari destinations. Kruger National Park is a five-hour drive from the city. Madikwe Game Reserve is four hours north. The Pilanesberg and Sun City complex, home to the famous Sun City Resort, is just two hours away.

Kruger National Park: The Big Five, Game Drives, and Africa’s Most Famous Wildlife Reserve

Kruger National Park covers nearly 20,000 square kilometres, roughly the size of Wales, and is home to the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo. It is also home to cheetah, wild dog, hippo, crocodile, and more than 500 species of bird. Kruger is not a zoo. Animals move freely across the reserve, and sightings are never guaranteed, which is precisely what makes them so extraordinary when they happen.

South African safari lodges within and around the Kruger range from SANParks rest camps (comfortable and affordable) to ultra-luxury private game reserves including Sabi Sand, Timbavati, and Thornybush, where lodges can cost upwards of £600 per person per night but deliver experiences that are genuinely transformative.

The best time for game viewing in Kruger is the dry season, May through September, when vegetation thins and animals concentrate around water sources. Fly from Johannesburg to Skukuza Airport or Hoedspruit Airport for the most direct access. Flight Dreamers can arrange the complete Kruger itinerary including UK to South Africa flights, domestic connections, and lodge bookings.

The Garden Route and the Cape Winelands: South Africa Beyond the Safari

The Garden Route stretches along South Africa’s southern coast from Mossel Bay to Storms River. A 300-kilometre ribbon of forests, lagoons, beaches, and dramatic cliff scenery. The Garden Route Game Lodge near Riversdale offers malaria-free safari within striking distance of the coast. Knysna, with its famous lagoon and oyster festivals, is the Garden Route’s most beloved town. Wilderness, Plettenberg Bay, and Tsitsikamma National Park complete one of Africa’s finest scenic drives.

The Cape Winelands centred on Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Paarl, are South Africa’s Napa Valley, its Bordeaux, and its Tuscany rolled into one. Stellenbosch has been producing wine since the 1680s. Franschhoek, meaning ‘French Corner’, was settled by Huguenot refugees and retains a distinctly French character in its architecture, cuisine, and wine style. The Babylonstoren estate and the Delaire Graff Lodge are among the most celebrated wine destinations in the world.

Practical South Africa Travel Guide: Visas, Safety, Currency, and Getting Around

Entry Requirements, Passport Rules, and What UK Travellers Need Before Flying to South Africa

UK passport holders do not need a visa to visit South Africa for stays up to 90 days one of the great advantages of travelling there from Britain. However, your passport must have at least 30 days validity beyond your intended departure date, and you must have at least two blank pages for entry and exit stamps. Check these details before booking.

If you are travelling with children, be aware that South Africa has strict documentation requirements for minors, particularly around unabridged birth certificates. These rules are enforced stringently at immigration. Flight Dreamers can advise on all documentation requirements when booking your South Africa package.

South African Rand, Safety, and the Practical Reality of Travel in South Africa

South Africa uses the South African Rand (ZAR). The exchange rate is extremely favourable for UK travellers the pound currently buys approximately 23–24 Rand, making South Africa excellent value for UK visitors once you have paid for flights. Safari lodges in US dollars are the exception; most everyday costs in Rand are remarkably affordable by UK standards.

Safety in South Africa requires awareness and sensible precautions, particularly in Johannesburg. Stay in vetted areas, use reputable transport, avoid displaying valuable items, and always take local advice. Cape Town’s tourist areas, the Garden Route, Kruger, and the Winelands are all well-established and heavily visited by UK tourists without incident. Flight Dreamers recommends comprehensive travel insurance on all South Africa bookings.

My Experience

Here is what nobody tells you about South Africa before your first trip: the country is vastly bigger and more varied than you imagine, and the most common regret is not having allowed more time.

I flew into Cape Town for the first time thinking three nights would be enough. It is not. Cape Town alone just the city, could absorb a week comfortably. Table Mountain one morning, Kalk Bay another, Stellenbosch for a full day, Camps Bay for an evening, Cape Point for an afternoon. By day three I was already planning my return.

The Kruger experience is unlike anything I can compare to another destination. My first game drive was at 5:30am freezing, exhausted, slightly sceptical about whether we would see anything significant. Within forty minutes we had driven through a herd of buffalo, watched a pair of lions finish a kill, and sat in complete silence watching an elephant family cross the road three metres in front of the vehicle.

Nothing prepares you for the scale of the Kruger. It is enormous. The wildlife is not gathered at one location, you drive for an hour and see nothing but impala, then round a bend and find five lions under a tree. The uncertainty is the experience. Do not go expecting certainty. Go expecting Africa.

The Garden Route surprised me most. I had read about it but could not quite imagine what it would look like. It looks like the most dramatic version of the English countryside compressed into a coastal strip and given a year-round climate. Knysna Lagoon on a still morning, mist on the Outeniqua Mountains behind the town, oysters from the market, this is South Africa at its most quietly perfect.

Book early. South Africa is not a secret. The best lodges in Kruger, the top Stellenbosch wine estates, the Babylonstoren retreat they fill months in advance. Flight Dreamers can secure availability that is not publicly advertised, and our Africa team knows exactly which properties are worth the premium and which ones are not.
