The difference between the cheapest and most expensive time to fly from the UK to Nairobi can exceed £800 on a return ticket. Knowing the pricing calendar and understanding what drives the peaks, is the single most effective way to save money on this route.

When Nairobi Flight Prices Are at Their Lowest from the UK

January and February: The Best Value Window Nobody Talks About

January and February are consistently the cheapest months to fly from the UK to Nairobi. The combination of post-Christmas low demand, UK winter (when most people are not thinking about Kenya), and Kenya’s dry season creates a genuine pricing sweet spot.

Economy return fares in this window can start from around £380 with Kenya Airways direct, or £420–£480 via connecting routes through Dubai or Doha. These are the same seats that cost £900+ in August. The travel itself is excellent, January to February is dry season in Kenya, with warm days, cool evenings, and excellent wildlife visibility in the national parks.

September and October also offer low fares prices return to the £380–£550 range as summer demand drops off. Kenya’s short rains begin in late October, but September is particularly good: dry weather, lower fares, and parks that are recovering from the July–August peak season crowds.

March to May: Low Prices but Rain to Consider

March to May brings Kenya’s long rains. Demand falls further and fares drop accordingly. This can be an attractive window if your trip is less focused on wildlife viewing and more on cultural exploration, Nairobi city experiences, or visiting family.

Budget travellers who are flexible about weather will find some of the year’s lowest prices in April and May. The trade-off is real the Maasai Mara can be muddy and some safari tracks become inaccessible during heavy rainfall.

When Nairobi Flight Prices Peak from the UK

Summer School Holidays: The Most Expensive Period

June, July, and August are peak season for UK to Nairobi flights. UK school summer holidays drive a sharp increase in family travel to Kenya. Fares during this window regularly exceed £900 return and can surpass £1,400 during the mid-July to mid-August peak.

July and August also overlap with the Great Migration in the Maasai Mara one of the most celebrated wildlife events in the world which pulls demand from international travellers as well as UK visitors. If you want to see the migration and you are price-sensitive, book at least 5–6 months in advance.

Christmas and New Year: The Most Expensive Window of the Year

December is the peak of peaks. Christmas and New Year flights to Nairobi are among the most expensive on the route. UK school holiday timing, festive travel demand, and the appeal of spending Christmas in Kenya combine to push prices well above £1,000 return and sometimes close to £1,500.

If you must travel over Christmas, book at least 6 months in advance. October bookings for December travel can still catch fares in the £700–£850 range before they climb further. Leaving it to November or December for Christmas travel will be expensive.

Seasonal Nairobi Travel: Matching Your Trip to the Best Conditions

The Great Migration: Why July to October Is Worth the Premium

The wildebeest and zebra migration between the Serengeti in Tanzania and the Maasai Mara in Kenya is one of Africa’s most extraordinary natural events. The peak crossing season runs from roughly July to October, with river crossings most likely in August and September.

If the migration is the purpose of your trip, July to September is when to go. Expect to pay peak-season fares in June–August, but fares soften slightly in September while the migration is still active. Booking 5–6 months out gives you the best chance of securing reasonable fares for this window.

Festive and Diaspora Travel: Eid, Christmas, and UK Bank Holiday Timing

Nairobi has a significant Kenyan and East African diaspora community in the UK, concentrated in cities including London, Birmingham, and Manchester. Travel demand spikes around Eid, Christmas, Easter, and UK bank holiday periods all of which push prices higher on the UK–Nairobi route.

If you are travelling to visit family, the best strategy is to book as early as possible for festive periods, and to consider flying in the days before or after the main holiday rush rather than on the peak departure dates themselves. Departing on 23 or 26 December rather than 24 December can produce meaningful savings.

MY EXPERIENCE SECTION

Here is what nobody tells you about the Nairobi pricing calendar: February is probably the best month of the year to fly there, and almost no one from the UK goes in February.

I understand the instinct. February in the UK is grim. You want sun. You think: Kenya. Then you look at flights and assume it is like everywhere else cheapest in November, not in the school holidays, fine. The Nairobi route does not work like that.

January and February are genuinely cheap and the weather in Nairobi is excellent. Dry season, warm afternoons, cool evenings. The national parks are not overrun. The Giraffe Centre does not have a 45-minute queue. Hotels are offering their best rates. It is, in every practical sense, a great time to go.

I once booked a February trip to Nairobi for around £400 return that would have cost over £950 in late July for the exact same seats. That is not a small difference. That is a second holiday.

The only real caveat: the Great Migration in the Mara peaks July to October, so if that is your reason for going, you will need to book early and pay the premium. But if your trip is Nairobi, cultural experiences, and the national parks, February is a secret the internet has not fully shared yet.
